Double Entry Journal #1

Quote: Critical media literacy not only teaches students to learn from media, to resist media manipulation, and to use media materials in constructive ways, but is also concerned with developing skills that will help create good citizens and that will make individuals more motivated and competent participants in social life (Kellner & Share, 2005). Reaction: I agree with this statement and believe that how media is used to form peoples’ opinions must be addressed when talking to students about media. Skills to evaluate the message being presented need to be taught so that the media consumer can know if they want to trust the message. Critical analysis of media messages is an important step in learning from the media because it allows the viewer to decide if they are going to accept the message or reject the message and why. Critical thinking skills are an important part of our daily lives and are necessary to develop a positive place in society and be able to decide where we fit into the global picture. Here is a fact to show how media surrounds our daily life. the quote is from the Center for Media Literacy's website. This website has many good resources for educators interested in media literacy. The high rate of media consumption and the saturation of our society by the media. The average American household has the television on more than seven and a half hours a day. The average urban dweller is exposed to more than 1500 ads a DAY! Just like the air and water around us, and about which we are increasingly concerned, media education takes our media environment seriously(CML, 1990). Source: CML. (1990). [Web log message].
